Description
Backroll is an invert: the board goes over your head. You learn it on the small kicker with the instructor on the pontoon. The key is the line into it and trusting the cable, which always brings you back to your feet if you keep it close. A backward roll along the board's axis, off the heel or the toe edge.
How it's done
- 01
Approach on a firm, progressive edge, legs bent, handle low.
- 02
Off the lip push with your legs and take the board over your head along the trick's own line.
- 03
Keep the handle close to your hip through the whole rotation.
- 04
Spot the water three quarters of the way round and extend your legs.
- 05
Land with your weight slightly back and pick the cable back up.
Common mistakes
- Letting the handle go at the top: you lose tension and land on your back.
- Looking down too early: the rotation stops.
- Coming in too fast: try less speed and more edge.
The ways
This trick is landed 4 ways: each is worth the points of its own difficulty and is approved on its own.
